In Dubai, most commercial vehicles that carry advertising or a printed brand identity need to be approved by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) before the wrap or decals go on. The approval covers what your artwork shows, how much of the vehicle it covers, and how it interacts with the vehicle's safety features (lights, plates, mirrors). This guide walks through what the RTA looks for, what you need to prepare, and the typical process end-to-end.
Why RTA approval exists
Commercial vehicle advertising in Dubai is treated as outdoor advertising on a moving billboard. RTA rules aim to keep on-road messaging safe, legible and consistent with UAE cultural and regulatory standards. Installing branding without approval can lead to fines and, in some cases, an order to remove the wrap.
Vehicles and situations that typically need approval
- Company vans, pickups and trucks with any external branding.
- Buses and staff transport carrying a logo or campaign.
- Delivery and e-commerce fleets.
- Third-party advertising on private cars (where allowed).
- Any vehicle changing base colour by wrap (also requires RTA colour-change).
Rules and scope change from time to time. If you are unsure, check with the RTA or ask us — Wecare submits vehicle branding files to RTA on customers' behalf every week.
What the RTA looks at in the artwork
- Content. The design must be consistent with UAE cultural, religious and advertising standards. Content that could be considered offensive, political or misleading is rejected.
- Trade licence. The advertised brand must match the trade licence of the vehicle owner (or an approved third- party advertising arrangement).
- Coverage. Windows, headlights, tail lights, number plates and required reflective areas must remain clear.
- Contact details. Phone numbers and web addresses must be accurate and easy to read from a normal viewing distance.
- Safety information. On trucks and heavy vehicles, mandatory markings and reflective tape must stay visible.
Documents you will typically need
- Valid trade licence of the owner or advertiser.
- Vehicle registration (Mulkiya) for every vehicle in the submission.
- Emirates ID or passport copy of the authorised signatory.
- Print-ready artwork sized to the vehicle template, showing all four sides plus the roof if relevant.
- Colour reference (Pantone or hex) when a specific brand colour is critical.
The end-to-end process with Wecare
- Brief and design. We adapt your brand to each vehicle model and produce a print-ready file for approval.
- Pre-check. Our team reviews the artwork against current RTA rules before submission to reduce the chance of rejection.
- Submission. We upload the artwork and supporting documents through the RTA channel.
- Review. The RTA reviews the design; if they ask for changes we edit and resubmit.
- Approval and installation. Once the approval is issued, production starts and the vehicle is scheduled for installation at our Al Quoz workshop.
- Handover. We provide the approval reference for your records.
Timelines to plan for
Approval turnaround depends on RTA workload and how clean the first-time submission is. Well-prepared files typically move through in a few working days; rejections and rework can add a week or more. Build approval time into your project plan; Wecare can start design in parallel so there is no wasted week.
Common reasons approvals get rejected
- Contact numbers or web addresses that don't match the trade licence.
- Coverage of headlights, tail lights, mirrors or number plates.
- Illegible tag lines or contact details at road viewing distance.
- Content that is judged too close to another registered brand.
- Missing or expired trade licence copies.
